Transform a bland wall into a work of art
Custom printed wall graphics are still trending, with endless creative opportunities to use them in a way that complements and enhances your style and your home – ranging from abstract images to photos from your favourite family holiday. They can also be used effectively in an office or commercial space, to subtly reinforce the essence of your brand or to make a room more conducive to work. For any of these spaces, keep these tips in mind:
Check the size
When choosing a graphic or photo, make sure that the image is of a high resolution so that it will print clearly and not come out grainy. Large scale artwork can be made-up in proportion, for example if the wall size is 12m x 4m, then the artwork could be made-up to be 3m x 1m. Image files should be a minimum of 300DPI. Work with professional and experienced designers and printers to ensure accuracy and optimal quality.
Prep the wall
Make sure that the wall is properly prepped for wallpaper. There are three simple steps for this: start by skimming the wall, then plaster it and finally treat it with one coat of primer/masonry paint. If you’re new on the DIY scene, hire a professional to guarantee a perfect finished product.
Think ahead
If you want to purchase a graphic or photo taken by a professional photographer, browse through images available on websites such as Shutterstock and Getty Images. There are thousands and thousands of stock images available, so it is a good plan to have an idea of what you are looking for at the outset. Also keep in mind that you’re going to have to look at it every day, so opt for something that will suit the mood of the room and not just your mood on the day you choose it!
Pick your colour palette
If you want to create a striking yet subtle look, you could make the image black and white, or sepia, which will complement just about any colour scheme. If you’d prefer to go for a bolder look consisting of more colour, be sure to consider the colour palette of the rest of your space. To prevent the room from feeling too bright or busy, opt for more neutral furniture pieces with scatters or light fittings in complimentary tones, to pick up the colours used in your wall art.
Let it come alive
Think about what the room is lacking and find a way to incorporate it. For example, if you are living or working in an environment that isn’t really conducive to plant life, you can brighten up the space with a photo from nature. We have a large-scale print of daisies in our office space, and it never fails to brighten up a gloomy winter’s day. The use of custom printed wall graphics is a quick and easy way to completely change the look and feel of a space. It works in just about any setting and will make an otherwise dull wall ‘come alive’ – transforming it from a blank canvas into a work of art.
