Connecting heart, mind & body to the experience of your space
“When making experiences, attention to detail matters.”
– Richard Branson
WHY SHOULD ANYONE CARE ABOUT DETAIL
Straddling 25+ years of practiced experience & running a business of design; I can unequivocally declare: attention to detail is not about perfection; it is about excellence and about striving for constant improvement. Attention to detail cannot be (and never is) added later. It is an entire development process and a natural philosophy.
“How you do anything is how you do everything”. A Buddhist quote that will keep on revealing its truth; the more attention you pay to not only yourself, but also to every detail that appears around you in day to day life. It involves being an observer.
There is a famous phrase passed around in architectural circles:
“God is in the details.”
And on the flip side: “The devil is in the details”. I personally am a glass half full kind of person; hence the heading. It reflects positive reward in paying closer attention to detail. In other words; the latter is absent and the former, present.
Further more; for me there is a symbiotic existence & balance that co-exists between too much clutter & little to no detailing in any designed space. Carefully curated & styled areas in an environment creates beauty & allows your psychology to go on pause. Detailing in architecture & design is where the magic comes together. The catch; it has to be considered from the very beginning, throughout.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE POSITIVE EFFECTS WHEN ADDING DETAILS?
- Detailing adds a unique personality & style to your space, literally & conceptually.
- It can be thought provoking; encourage conversation; they are the “experienced” elements within a space.
- Giving details special attention makes a space feel more intentional, which in turn, will have a more luxurious effect.
- It makes a mundane or boring (but necessary) element stand out.
- The smallest details can make the biggest impact.
- And on a practical note; cleverly applied it can conceal unwanted construction elements that is unattractive to look at.
“Details make perfection, and perfection is not a detail.”
– Leonardo Da Vinci, Italian Architect, Artist
